Graham Watson MEP
Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for South West England and Gibraltar will is now a Patron of the Balkans Peace Park Project

Our new Patron, MEP Graham Watson has sent this message:

“The European Union has done a great deal to secure peace and prosperity for its members, but has been deeply troubled by conflict in South East Europe. Whilst EU membership remains a beacon of hope for Balkan countries, schemes like the Balkan Peace Park Project are vitally important to peace in Europe.
The Project rises above the politics that have plagued the region, and instead focuses on the issues that are common to Albanians, Kosovans and Montenegrins alike; protecting the shared natural environment and promoting a sustainable economic prosperity for all those living in the area.
For me, this embodies both the spirit of liberalism and European integration, and I am therefore proud to be a Patron of the Balkans Peace Park Project.”

Graham Watson has been an MEP since 1994, and led the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe from 2002 until he stood down in 2009
International Peace Park Expeditions is planning a big expansion of its activities in the Balkans Peace Park area in 2010.  This will include international groups of Masters students doing Field study courses, and regional leadership courses also.  If you wish to know more or get involved you can find a link and details on our links page.

The BPPP aims to facilitate the creation of a trans-national, cross-border park in the adjoining mountain areas of Kosovo/a, Montenegro and northern Albania as a symbol of peace and cooperation:

  • to promote environmental conservation
  • to stimulate local employment
  • to promote sustainable visitor activities in the region

The BPPP is a grassroots network bringing together transnational actors, especially environmental activists in the Balkans, the UK and around the globe, linking with people living and working in the valleys and villages of the area. A truly international cross-border protected area in one of the most spectacular and least known mountain ranges in Europe, can both further the needs, interests and aspirations of the local communities, and help sustain biodiversity and ecological responsibility.
